Inca Bridge of Q'eswachaka

Suspension Bridge of Q'eswachaka

Inca bridge of Q'eswachaka in Cusco, 33 m long and 1.2 m wide, is located on the Apurímac River at 3,700 meters above sea level. It is renewed every year for 4 days in the month of June, where the bridge structures are replaced by a new one. The bridge is located 110 km southeast of the City of Cusco.

It is part of the Inca trail and is made of vegetable fiber or straw, maintaining the tradition of rural techniques and the community work system to maintain it to this day.

Q’eswachaka is the last bridge of its kind and it is almost in an original state, it has been maintained from generation to generation for more than five centuries by the communities: Huinchiri, Chaupibanda, Ccollana Quehue and Pelcaro.

The new structure of the bridge is woven with ancient techniques for three days, by about 1,000 community members who use braided straw of ichu and chachacomo, while ritual ceremonies and dances are held by the inhabitants of the ayllus in the area.

Fourth day and can be used by everyone, without a doubt this wonderful Inca work is a living example of our ancient culture.
