If you are looking for a new and spectacular hike, Lares valley trek 4 days is for you, this amazing hike is located on the right side of the urubamba river. Lares valley trek is an alternative route to the inca trail, it has 36 km of distance from thermal baths of Lares to Ollantaytambo.

We will cross the Peruvian Andes from the beautiful valley of Lares to the sacred valley of the Incas in Ollantaytambo, walk through beautiful lagoons and spectacular Andean landscapes.

Lares Valley Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco / Lares Valley / Huacahuasi

We pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 6am and travel by bus for approximately two hours to Calca, where we stop to buy personal supplies and bread for children we will meet during our trek.

From here we drive three hours further to Lares Valley (3100m), where we can soak in the hot springs and have lunch. We meet with our horsemen and mules and begin the trek. After 4 to 5 hours of walking, we arrive at our first campsite at Huacahuasi(3850m).

Day 2: Huacahuasi / Patacancha

After breakfast we commence the most challenging day of the trek, hiking over the Ipsaycocha Pass at 4350m. We then descend for half an hour towards the breathtaking Lake Ipsaycocha, where we eat lunch.

After lunch, we continue for nearly three hours mostly downhill, arriving at the town of Patacancha, where we will set up camp. Along the route the scenery is stunning – there are glacial lakes, waterfalls and snowcapped mountains. This area is also rich in bird life and there is the possibility of seeing Andean ibis, geese, flamingoes and more.

Day 3: Patacancha / Ollantaytambo / Aguas Calientes

After breakfast, we begin making our way to Ollantaytambo and pass through villages such as Huilloc and Patallacta, where we witness traditional Andean weaving by local women. We will also pass by the Inca sites of Huanacaure and Hatunayaorko. After having lunch in Ollantaytambo, we make our way to the train station and take the train to Aguas Calientes (2040m), where we will stay the night in a hotel.

Day 04: Machupicchu / Cusco

We get up very early to catch the first bus up the mountain to Machupicchu. After a walking tour of the ruins provided by the guide, there will be free time to explore Machu Picchu independently. We need to be back in Aguas Calientes by around 06.30 pm to catch the train back to Cusco.

  • Rain jacket or a Poncho, waterproof trousers (especially for rainy season Nov-March).
  • Plastic bags to store your spare clothes.

  • Flashlight and batteries, pocket knife, matches.
  • Camera.
  • Water bottle, preferably metal so it is more heat-resistant.
  • Hat and / or beanie to protect you from the sun and the cold.
  • High factor sun block & insect repellent.

  • Some extra snacks (biscuits, energy bars, chocolate).
  • Towel.
  • Swimsuit (recommended for the hot springs).
  • Some cash (soles or dollars).
